RETHINK the WAY
THINGS ARE MADE

NexusAM is transforming metal additive manufacturing by tackling its biggest barrier: the prohibitive cost of part qualification. Our platform cuts qualification time and costs while ensuring traceable, consistent quality.

Organisation Overview

NexusAM is an early-stage Imperial College London startup tackling the billion-dollar metal 3D printing qualification and certification problem. Manufacturers spend upwards of 50% of part cost on prevention measures. Meanwhile, it can take years and cost over £10 million to certify a single new component for production, due to the difficulty in effectively inspecting complex parts. This provides a severe challenge for manufacturers who need to spend large amounts of money, without having a way to fully verify that the parts being produced are defect free.

To solve this challenge, our team have pioneered an approach combining in-process sensing and groundbreaking artificial intelligence. Our patent-pending AI platform, NEXUS, collects data from multiple sensors during 3D printing and produces an objective digital-twin of the components. This enables the detection of defects to be identified with accuracies rivalling and/or exceeding traditional methods. Our team is made up of subject matter experts in AI and AM with experience scaling and selling deep tech business.

About the Role

In this internship you will be working with AI models that turn raw sensor data into actionable insights to reduce defects forming in our metal 3D printing technology.

A fundamental issue with the complex high-dimensional nature of the metal 3D printing process is that defects can form due to process variability. The cutting-edge agentic AI technology you will be involved with developing will directly detect such defects in real-time, enabling manufacturers to adapt and assure their processes and ensure quality control.

The internship project focuses on enhancing our AI capabilities to improve defect detection accuracy and expand our platform's functionality. You will be fully integrated into our technical team, working directly with our AI engineers and manufacturing specialists in a collaborative environment.

During the internship, you will contribute to a range of activities including:

  • Developing an AI agent that translates complex defect data into clear, meaningful reports that are accessible.
  • Enabling automated explanations and root cause analysis by supporting the AI agent to reason and explain sensor data outcomes.
  • Developing experiences showing the AI agent's benchmark to convince internal stakeholders and external partners of its capability.
  • Producing technical documentation and performance analysis reports to communicate findings.

Your direct responsibilities within those actions will be:

  • Developing a manufacturing AI agent tailored for automated defect analysis and reporting.
  • Creating and improving data labelling pipelines to expand our training datasets and improve our AI model.
  • Evaluating and optimising model performances on specific hardware configurations to ensure efficient running.
  • Collaborating in regular code reviews and technical discussions with the wider team to build ideas and solutions.
  • Documenting methodologies, model architectures, and experimental results, building clear records.

You will work directly with our PyTorch-based machine learning pipeline, interact with our sensor data processing systems, and utilise our GPU computing infrastructure. If you do not have experience with transformer architectures, computer vision techniques, and data processing workflows, mentorship will be provided.
